star gazing

atroxhandler Aug 23, 2006 11:28 PM

Has anyone had ther venomous (crotalus) star gaze? I have seen boas and pythons do it and if it becomes a habbit can mean an RI. Any thoughts on this?

Viperade and Crotalids are at hi risk of that disease. If you are witnessing star gazeing then seperate the animal/s doing it imediately and observe them closely.

Snakes will also star gaze in the case of severe respiotory infection in an attempt to clear their airways. 9/10 star gazeing is a very dire sign.

Unfortunately, when an animal is at that stage it is usualy too late ; ;

"Star gazing" may be a sign of a neurological disorder. In boas and pythons, star gazing may be indicitive of IBD, a disease with a near 100% mortality rate in boids and no known cure.

If you have a snake habitually doing this, you should probably get it checked out by a qualified reptile vet. It could be a sign of something much worse than an RI (like a neurological disorder).

Star gazing is the sign of a serious problem... In viperids, it most commonly means the animal is infected with paramyxovirus... This is a very serious disease that attacks the neurological and respiratoy systems... It is very contagious and can destroy entire collections... It has been recorded in crotalids and in bitis and some other viperid species...
