I got this guy at the Orlando expo (FIRE) this summer from Brian Dierking and he's about 3 months old now. He just shed for the first time since i brought him home, so i decided to snap some pics. Enjoy!

Let me know what you think of him. 8-)

..Very pretty snake. Have you done any scale counts?

for the comments! I forgot to mention that his name is Peanut, becuse of his peanut-shaped spots. 8-)

Jeff, how exactly are you supposed to do the scale counts? Are you supposed to count the rows of scales around his body at midbody? I think that sounds right...

Andy,
...That is exactly right. Unfortunately it is tough to count scales on little snakes when they will not hold still for you. Your PICs show good detail. You may be able to take a couple of macro shots of the snake at midbody and get a count that way. If you can get several PICs that show the same crescent markings you can count up to a crescent on a PIC taken of the side of the snake and count from the crescent up to the midline along the back on a PIC taken at a higher angle. Sometimes you can wait for them to shed and count scales on the shed skin. Picking the midbody point is not an exact science. I pick what looks like midbody and count and then try a little forward and a little aft of that first count and the higher count is the number I use. Snakes have smaller numbers of scale rows just behind the head and just forward of the vent and increasingly larger numbers of scale rows as you approach midbody from either end of the snake. Most snakes (there must be some serious exceptions)will have the largest number of scale rows at or near midbody. I have counted scales on a whole bunch of snakes. At one time I was trying to find a method of determining the sex of Rainbow Boas counting the number of subcaudal scales. As expected the males have longer tails and higher numbers of subcaudal scales but there was enough overlap in the numbers that this idea did not work.
