Photo of the twins

StephF Aug 24, 2006 05:12 PM

Here's a photo of the twins that didn't make it.

The one on the right was alive for a day after pipping, but there was never any movement from the smaller one on the left. As you can see, the one on the right was slightly more fully developed.

It looks like they were sharing a yolk.

Wow, that's amazing. Thanks for sharing, Steph. I've been lucky this year, I haven't had a single mutation yet! With the volume of hatchlings that I deal with, this is fantastic!

This is the first mutation or deformity I've had in a while (not counting extra scutes, which I do see occasionally).
I guess I've been lucky.
I felt bad about these twins, since the one was living if only for a short while.

Very similar to the ones I had, I think, in 2004.

The smaller one was dead. The survivor lived for
several months.

Thanks for the photos.

In retrospect, it's pretty surprising that the egg didn't rupture earlir, given that the egg itself was normal-sized and the twins were also. The one twin pipped right about the same time it's clutchmates did, too, so it wasn't even really premature.

Another turtle had layed three eggs, one of which was larger than the rest and I thought for sure that was the candidate for twins, but it wasn't after all.

Heartbreaking....it would have been a wonderful miracle if they lived.
