Why wont they grow?!?!

bpfreak Aug 24, 2006 06:11 PM

I have 1 normal female Ball Python that is almost a year old now and only around 350g. I have had her since november and have been feeding her mice once a week.

I also have a 2 babies i picked up july that were born in early june and they are only about 70g! I have been feeding them once a week as well. (mouse weanlings). Shouldn't they be at least a little bigger by now??

I have a female pastel that has gained almost 300g since may, so i think i'm doing everything right.

What am i doing wrong?? someone help!

the size of the prey you are offering may be the culprit. I never feed my animals, even hatchlings weanling mice, they are too small. for babies I usually start them out on small adult mice for the first 5-10 meals then they get normal adult mice for the next 5-10 feedings. After 20 feedings, large to jumbo mice or rat chubs can be taken with no problem. Another problem you may be having is that the feedings are too far spaced apart. Hatchlings have huge metabolisms and can digest meals very quick. If too long of a period goes between feedings the animal can start to use the little bit of weight that was put on by the previous meal. I prefer 3-5 day feeding schedules for all animals less than 2 yrs old modified if an animal starts to look a little fat.
