BlackTail No Nose

Rivets55 Aug 24, 2006 07:22 PM

Went by the local herp store yesterday (who shall remain nameless), to look at a male BT Cribo. Seems they've had it for at least a year and kept it in a way too small cage. As a result it has the absolute worst nose-rub I've ever seen.

The rub isn't just raw - its down to the bone. From the top or side, he looks like one of those short-headed treesnakes. Seeing that makes me upset, to say the least. It desprately needs better care. But, you know waht they say about rescues.

Other than the hideous nose rub, the snake appears healthy - maybe a little thin. He's quite strong!

I wish there was some way to help him.

Sorry no pics - but then, you really don't want to see.

Regards,

John D.

Very sad to hear this, John,

I have sent you an e-mail to this regard. Again, I'm sure we all appreciate the heads up...

Thanks again,

Jeff

Does this unnamed shop have the initials EBV? If so I know the snake you are talking about and have considered rescueing it for a year now.

Actually, no, that's not it.

I don't want to say anything more specific here.

However, be of good cheer; for, at least for this BT, there is a plan in the works.

Thanks,

John D

Yea, I saw a horseshoe racer doing the same at a pet store and it wore its mouth to the bone. I informed the staff and asked them to take the light bulb out of the cage. I even eventually informed the owner to get his snake out of that death trap, and all he did was complain about the snake's thermal burns. He did nothing to get his snake in better conditons and the store gave it back to him and it died weeks later. Some folks just have no feelings for animals.

Hi,

I lurk on this forum, but usually post on small terrestrial snakes.

This question of what to do when pet stores abuse herps always gets me going. My wife refuses to even let me walk into pet stores because it usually ruins my mood for the rest of the day.

Anyhow, before I rant too much, I think these are pretty clear cases to report to the local animal cruelty officials. Even if they know absolutely nothing about snakes (and in my experience these guys rarely do), seeing one with obvious trauma and an obvious cause for the trauma, and being denied treatment should be cut and dry.

Cheers,
Billy
