Stunting

e&t Aug 04, 2003 03:08 PM

What are the facts about stunting young gators? The reason I ask is because I recently acquired a gator that had been CB and raised in a small indoor enclosure. He is now almost 10 years old and unfortunately only about 4 feet in length. He has the outward bulky appearance of an adult but only shorter. Since I acquired him I have provided him with a large outdoor enclosure, and he has appeared to really benefit from it (I live in a state that is part of their natural range so he has adapted wonderfully) His weight is up and he seems to be getting a little more size on him. My question is, will he now resume normal growth rates or is it too late. Will he remain small or have a growth spurt? thanks

I am afraid there is no definite answer to that. He may or may not have a growth spurt. If I where to guess though I would say he probably will have a small growth spurt and might even put on as much as foot or two but will always be somewhat small for his age and remain a little stunted. Remember though that is just a guess based on a few individuals I have seen personaly or read about like that over the years. Unfortunately even with the best of care the stunting he suffered may effect his longevity. But then again anything could happen.
