Incubator Pics and Questions...

Now I'm not done with it yet. I still need to seal up the plexiglass and put the finishing touches on it. I had two feet of heat tape left from my rack so I figured I would see if it heated it well. I can get it up to a steady 90 inside, but the heat tape gets damn hot. My question is: should I buy another foot or two to put inside so it doesn't get so hot. Or: I have every kind of heat bulb laying around. Should I put a bulb in there for steady heat and the tape can take care of the rest? This would be nice because I could see in at night too. Does light affect the eggs? Any help is appreciated. Thanks BrianD

Wow, that's really nice. I have a few questions for you.

1. How heavy is that thing? Did you take the cooling system out of it?

2. How did you cut through the door to make that window?

3. Do the temps vary from the bottom to the top? If so, by how much?

A: Not very heavy at all. It's pretty big though. When I got it from the recycling center they had already removed the cooling system.

2. How did you cut through the door to make that window?

A: I used a jigsaw. That damn door is so tuff to cut. A power tool is a must.

3. Do the temps vary from the bottom to the top? If so, by how much?

A: To be honest I haven't tested this yet. Once I saw how hot the tape was getting I unplugged it. This is why I was asking for opinions on how to add more heat.

What type of recycling center did you get it from? Did you have to pay anything for it?

You could use a small computer fan at the bottom of the fridge and point it up towards the heat tape to draw the heat away and ciculate it. Although I have been told you must use a variable 12v power pack with the fan so you can turn it all the way down so that its bearly moving. Not cramked at full speed.

See this site under articles. There is a python egg incubation techniques and DIY portion. It basically shows what you are doing minus the fridge and using a rubbermaid keeper.

Good luck, this is also my next project, would love to know how it works out. I may also go the fridge route. Later.
