tiny clutches

Jaime77 Aug 25, 2006 09:13 AM

I have a pair of beardies I've started breeding. Both are about three years old and 15" long. They mate frequently. However, the two clutches laid so far have been only four eggs each time. I was expecting something much more impressive. She eats well and gets supplements, UV light, etc. I took her to a vet and made sure she wasn't eggbound. What more can I do to increase her clutch size?

15" is a very small dragon to breed, which may explain the low clutch size, but even 4 for a small dragon is rather low, especially when the average clutch size for a bearded dragon is closer to 20 eggs.

My recommendation would be to not breed either dragon, since they are quite small to begin with, being only 15" at three years of age. Typical dragons should be at least 18" long and 350g before breeding (especially with the female). By breeding small dragons, you will end up with small babies. Considering dragons in the wild (for Inland Bearded dragons anyway) reach lengths close to 24" your dragons are quite small.
