Night snakes

KevColubrid Aug 25, 2006 10:17 AM

Hey all. Just a quick question, or couple of questions. I was recently at a reptile show around the St. Louis area, and a guy had a young texas night snake for sale. I didn't buy it, because I know next to nothing about them, other than that they're rear fanged, but I absolutely fell in love with this little guy. He had a very docile, curious personality, and you've gotta love those eyes. Anyway, I'd like to acquire some in the future, and was just curious if anyone knew anything about taking care of them in captivity. Thanks a bunch,
Kevin

I've had several of them and currently have one now...

The first two I had immediately took snakes. Whenever it was feeding time they would jump on whatever snakes I offered them. I probably could've switched them over to mice with ease if I had them longer than I did.

For their set ups, the AZ Night Snake was kept in a 20 QT sterilite container with newspaper and a water bowl. And the TX Night Snake was kept in a large plastic deli cup with a folded up paper towel. Both were around 13".

I recently obtained two more Night snakes (TX Nights) and kept them a bit differently. They were in small plastic deli cups with aspen bedding. Both were around 14". One of them immediately took to lizard scented pinkies, and was eating them every 4 days and eventually from my hands, he would've switched to unscented so easily. But he escaped. I still have the other one, and it is currently eating 1 scented pinky a month. It refuses snakes, I have no access to lizards other than 1 in my freezer . And it just doesn't want to eat how it's friend did.

But they are awesome snakes, worth keeping, easy to keep if you have what they need. And they are rear fanged but they don't even attempt to bite.

Yeah, that definately sounds like my kind of snake, if I can track one, or a couple of them down. They almost remind me of a mini-lyre snake, without a lyre snake's disposition. Anyway, thanks for the advice. If you ever get ahold of another one that eats as readilly as that first one did, look me up.
