what to do whle on vacation?

rns91294 Aug 04, 2003 03:19 PM

Okay, I have two turles. A redbelly (very small, still a baby) and a red eared slider (about twice the size of the other turtle). I feed them out of the tank other than the licve fish and live plants I put in the tank. On the red eared slider is interested in the fish, but they both eat the plants. Anyhow, when I feed them, i take them out and put them in a smaller tank to eat. The main reason for this is because my red eared slider took hold of my other turtle's leg when feeding them together in their tank. I thougt for sure my little redbelly was going to loose the leg as they fought togehter towards the bottom of the tank. now I am going on vacation in November for 8 days and my in-laws are coming to feed my cats. they will not touch the turtles or any of our other reptiles which are not problems as we just stick a lot of crickets in the cage for the week. So what do I do for my turtles? Put a lot of plants in the tank? Will that be okay for a week? I don';t want them to starve, bu i don't want my inlaws to through some pellets or anything else in there in fear that the same thing will happen again. My red eared slider is called dopey because of all the dumb stuff he does, including not realizing his buddies leg is not food when there is food around. Please help!! Any suggestions would be great!!

Can you get a tank divider and just keep the tank divided while you are away. Then just get a pill holder for each of them and put just enough pellets in it for each day's feeding. That way your inlaws won't over feed. Also they can feed them every other day while you are away without incident.
Just a thought.

That sounds reasonable and would work, but considering I have cats and they do not need to be looked at every day, I do not know if my in-laws will take the trip to my house everysingle day for the turtles when they don't like reptiles to begin with.

That's not a problem. They will be fine if fed every other day or even every third for that short a period of time. They will suffer no ill effects from it. When they come to take care of the cats they can feed the turtles. In between they will be fine. In fact this will probably be a better situation as they will not make as much waste in their tank while you are away.
