baby wont eat, I need advice

audreyj Aug 04, 2003 03:32 PM

Hi everyone, my baby Kingsnake just wont eat. I have tried tiny pinky mice and she smells them and moves away. I tried placing her in a container in a dark area for a while and she will just wrap herself around the pinky and sit there. Could it be that she is in a new situation/enviorment (it will be 3 days now since she has been with me) she is in a huge 65 gallon tank decorated to fit her natural enviorment and has heat. Any advice? Could I be doing something wrong? Thanks

Try putting her in a small cage, a plastic shoe box is perfect. Sometimes baby snakes are intimidated if they are a too-big, too-open cage. In the shoebox, you need only newspaper for a substrate, a small hiding box of some sort and a water bowl. Give her 4 or 5 days to calm down, then try feeding her again, but this time put her in a deli cup with just a pinkie and leave it alone for at least half a day. Once it starts feeding and becoming acclimated, then you can try putting it back in the big cage again.

If that doesn't work, post again and I, or one of the others, will help you further.

If you just got her she could need a few days to settle down, explore, and decide everythings safe. I think that with a full stomach they would have more trouble moving and be more sluggish, therefore if they are threatened they will want to be on their gaurd so they don't eat. Try not to handle her too much or make too much noise around her cage for a few days, after she's fed once you can start handling her gently again.

i don't know really what would be wrong... how long is your snake and how old? and what was the snakes habitat before you got the new cage or snake. the snake may be just wanting to get use to the cage. maybe scared also might have some ill ness with him or her.....what is the scheldule that you are feeding the snake? and how often? is the food live or frozen? email me or something so we could talk gregkastanes@hotmail.com or shiibysweetdude@aol.com or shiiby_Sweet_dude@yahoo.com
