Shedding problem

coolbran Aug 25, 2006 06:28 PM

I have a mexician milk snake that has never shed his skin the whole time I've owned him (about 6 months) He is a good eater get's a large pinkie or small fuzzy every week. Drinks water is kind of nervous when I hold him but settles down quickly. I've started giving him a soak in the basin with luke warm water for about 10 minutes but he still has'nt had a shed. His skin looks king of dry but is not flakeing off. any suggestions?

It can't hurt, and if the snake is ready to shed, it could help.

Take a plastic animal cage, such as the Kritter Keepers, which are sold by pet stores and animal suppliers, of an appropriate size. Make sure the container is secure! Nothing is worse than finding that your snake has escaped the container. Put about 1/2 to one inch of warm water in the bottom. Then put several paper towels in on top of the water. Put the snake in there. Then put a few dripping wet paper towels on top of the snake. Leave the snake in there for about 30 minutes.

This might help to loosen up his old skin enough for him to shed. Do you spray his tank? What kind of substrate are you using? What kind of heat? What kind of tank? The reason I ask is that perhaps the humidity is not enough for him to shed.

I will give it a try. I have had him in a 15 gal. tank with paper towels as flooring. I recently switched to crushed walnut shells. I haven't been spraying the tank so maybe the lack of moisture is the problem.
