Last 3- 2 MSP's and a Pinner

kingaz Aug 25, 2006 09:59 PM

Here are the final 3 hatchlings in my clutch. First off is a white MSP that ate immediately after shedding.

Next, another MSP that is the whitest snake in the clutch. Bad photo.

Last, a white pinner. This was the runt, the smallest snake from the smallest egg. Laid there like it was going to die for about a day after hatching, then became more lively. Hopefully I can get a meal in it soon. Almost no head pattern.

Yeah, I think I'm holding that one back. I want to keep one MSP, and maybe the green leonis too.

4 out of the 9 have fed now. All the MSP's took the first meal offered, all the leonis are being picky. Coincidence?

KenCasstevens Aug 26, 2006 03:47 AM

Gorgeous snakes! I believe the first one might be an intermediate, though. Great job. Let's see more pics. Thanks.

Thanks Ken. I really wish there was a definition for "intermediate". It would definitely deal with the width of the bands compared to the width of the background color. All 4 MSP's in this clutch have fairly wide areas of background color between their triads.

I've seen two different white male X F1 from wild female thayeri clutches and I think the combination produces some of the more interesting offspring I've seen. Beautiful snakes! I see that fantastic bright blue-green coloration of their wild grandmother in more than one of them, obviously most pronounced in that striking green leonis. I think the white allows the interesting characteristics of Tim's wild female to express much better than most combinations I've seen, particualrly that nice sea green color. I wish we could fast-forward two years to see how they all develop as they mature.

Congrats on a job well done and one supreme thayeri clutch!

Thanks Mike. I see hatchlings that heavily resemble their mother, their father, and everything in-between here. I'll be breeding 2 F1 females next year. I'll also be breeding a very light yellow/orange Dan V. female. Haven't decided on the daddies yet.

I need to get some photos of the green hatchling in better light. I was shooting these in my snake room under a combination of ambient (bluish), incandescent (yellow), and flash (white). A horrible combo of mixed lighting if you're trying to accurately portray colors. I need to get them out in 100% natural light. I'm going to wait until I get a few meals in them before I take them out for more pics.

mexicanamak Aug 26, 2006 02:49 PM

Agreed on the everything in between, and I was a little surprised to see so many nice milksnake phase from this clutch. They would all be great to breed back into the white bloodline. Any one of these would including your "ugly duckling". Quite honestly a very nice looking leonis with a lot going for it. Something about the white thayeri that I like is that the very light ground color allows other subtle color details to show through, pastel-like colors. Things you wouldn't see if they were covered over with say, a wash of orange.

I'm looking forward to the updated photos in natural light. I compare all of mine in indoor lighting against natural light often so I have a pretty good feel for the differences with color. I know your photos are pretty dead-on for color representation and I'm sure what I see in these indoor shots are exactly what I would see if these snakes showed up at my doorstep and I were holding them in my hand here. It will be interesting to see how close I am to what I think they will look like outdoors.

Here's a female produced by Dan in 2003 that is the product of a pale yellow leonis male, bred to a very clean white leonis female. Great pastel green color that she has kept to maturity. Very early pre-shed stage in this photo.....

I think we all have the same EYE for that "strawgrass" yellow and the keyholed saddles from Dan V. Mine,(Lester)is also from Dan's white line. I like the light yellow for the same reason, the contrast, but I can't say that I'm as big a fan of the white. Although did you see that candycane MSP he produced this year? Now that I really like.
I agree with you Mike about Gregs MSP's. They all have excellent contrasting colors. And all of them have a very unique look to them

My 4th clutch is from my white MSP female Emma and Lester pictured below. Most of the babies are MSP's with one intermediate. Good yellow in all of them. Lester has really been pounding down the mice and has bulked up considerably.

Either one of you guys want to send me your female on breeding loan? LOL

...I like 'em all, any way you serve 'em up however most of us do seem to lean towards that look as some of our fav's. Nice high contrast snakes get your attention which is why I also like the snakes I have from Jonel so much. Most of the ones I picked are light colored and they all have that awesome "gaudy" bold black border / keyholed saddle thing going on with interesting saddle shapes.

I did see Dan's candy cane leonis male, great looking snake and I think most folks would feel the way you do about the white thayeri and I can't say I blame them. If you're looking for a Pyro white, thayeri isn't gonna do it for you. Thayeri white isn't a clean and bright snow white, it isn't in their blood to keep it through adulthood and only a select few stay anywhere close to what most would consider white. They have too many other things going on in their color scheme that eventually somewhat overshadows it which is what makes thayeri what they are. Only the very best have the clean and bright white as hatchlings and it soon changes and allows other things to happen. Other colors begin to lay over it. But that's why I like 'em so much... it's nice to see all these other interesting lighter colors happening over a white background. Depth of color and variation defines thayeri! And in the end from a distance, they are still very much white colored snakes that look awesome.

Lester is indeed looking good Chris, great white thayeri! But I'm afraid my light pastel green female will always stay right here. I have high expectations for that girl with white and yellow males. Notice that she also has minimal black... I like that too and she has zero speckling. I also have her mother and a milksnake phase sib brother ready to work their magic.
