How long without food?

chico32826 Aug 25, 2006 10:11 PM

How long can a western hognose live without food? I bought one that is about 6 inches long last saturday at the daytona expo. The guy swore it was eating F/T pinkies and I have tried f/t pinkies, split brains, scented and live and doesn't show the slightest interest in any of them. It's really starting to bother me that he's not attempting to eat (I have several other species of snakes that eat with no problem at all) maybe he'll get hungry sooner or later or maybe he's just stressed from the new surroundings, but it has been a week since he's been here and he's not somewhere that he is bothered much. Any help is appreciated.

Is it possible to delete messages you post? I cxompletely forgot I psoted something similar to this already and acouple guys responded to this and their responses are still help ful and I see that sometimes they will go a while without eating so I need not worry for a while.

One of my female hogs went almost 7 months without eating. As of right now she is pounding food every chance she gets. My only concert with yours is that it looks very young. It's ok for a snake to go off feed when they are older and fatter, but when they are young and have little weight to them, it may become a concern. With your case though, I wouldn't worry. It's probably getting used to its new surroundings.

What I would do is get a hide, do not put any substrate for the hog to hide under in the tank, and set a mouse right at the entrance. The hog might feel secure in the hide and pop out an inch or so for a nice meal and drag it in the hide!
