WESTMORLAND GAZETTE (Kendal, UK) 18 August 06 Funds for farmers to help save toads (Ruth Lythe)
Farmers are being called on to help protect secret hideouts belonging to the rare Natterjack toad and grab their share of a potential £1m cash pot.
Newly-appointed Cumbrian Natterjack Toad project officer Dave Coward is asking farmers who have the amphibians on their land to sign up to Government-backed environmental stewardship schemes, which pays landowners to protect habitats and landscapes.
Mr Coward, who works for the Herpetological Conservation Trust, has estimated that there could potentially be around £1m annually waiting to be claimed by Cumbrian farmers who provide habitats for the creatures.
