Justin (Justinian2120) and I snuck out to do some herping yesterday morning on the Coastal Plain in Maryland.

I decided to let this big Eastern King go (the one that Derek Lee caught a few weeks ago). He was so big I just felt guilty putting him in a cage. We took him back to the same site where Derek, Kevin, and I caught it.

Here is Justin mugging it up for the camera and showing the belly pattern.

That's a great thing Peter. Someday you'll find some of his offspring and that will feel even better I bet.

Cool! Maybe you'll see the big guy again someday. Had any luck finding the same EK out in the field before? Last year I found a male at one sight in the blue and about a week later he was found again under a different piece of tin at the same site. This year a female was also found in the blue and about a week later there she was again under the same piece. It's nice when you want to get a good picture but wish they weren't in the blue.

hey dre, justin here...i know you were asking peter but i'll just add this-no coastals, they just keep eluding me in md...and that whole area has been hit hard by yuppies moving in and cleaning up any land that's not developed into housing or commercial strips.a real bummer.how about you, how'd you guys fare?

We was chasing copperheads ...But we came up on easterns, blk rats and racers alot of lizards and water snakes ....There's a small window for catching coastals [late april - early june]out side of this time frame it's very hard if not impossible unless your our there at night.
Good luck

...you know,i always love to find copperheads,to me they are so damn pretty, regardless of how common or feisty they can be.no two look quite the same........how'd you manage to look so bored in that pick,peter?lol...also,that one has some nice color to it,a lot prettier than some i've seen this far north.but again they're so variable.they also pose nicely for pics.
