Ringers/50% het pied!

msalem Aug 27, 2006 10:24 AM

I bred my proven 100% het pied male who gave me 3 pieds last year to an unproven 100% het pied female this year and she laid 5 eggs. No pieds hatched out but all of the babies are as light as the mother (she is very light and gold), all have the het markers, and 3 of them are ringers! They just finished shedding last night so here are some pics so let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Mohamed

It certainly does make you think about the possible relationship between ringers and pieds. Obviously not the results you wanted. Pieds would have been nicer but I would keep those ringers and start a dinking project.

What are ringers, and what are the markers for pied?

I've been wondering how you know a snake is 50% or 66% het for something... I know my basic genetics (that little square with the big and small letters), but I can't figure out how you know the hets from the normals if they both look the same...
Maybe I'm just missing something!

a ringer has a "ring" are the body, usually near where the kidneys are.......the photo is my ringer female....

this explains a marker...takem from next world exotics...

This is one of those guides I was talked into doing. The problem with this guide is that the "Marker" has not been proven to be definitive. I have seen many normals with the "Marker" trait. Will they turn out to be Het Piebalds? Who knows, but I am sure NOT ALL OF THEM WILL! (most likely most of them will not). I will say this though, if a breeder hatches out a clutch of Possible Het Piebalds they will keep the ones with the "Marker" traits. So in closing there has been no genetic proof about this trait...

you can't tell the het's from the normals that is where the percentages come in. In theory by breeding a het x het you would get 25% homozygous animals 25% normal and 50% het. since the normal looking babies could be het or normal we have to come up with the percentage chance that they are carrying the trait and that is where the 66% possible hets come into play. When you bred a het animal to a normal in theory half the babies are het and that is where 50% hets are made. It could be a gamble to buy possible het's but it could pay off big time.

I would bet those ringers are 100% het pieds.I'd give it a go and see if they prove out.are they females?

I have 2 boys and 3 girls and I am planning on keeping one of the males to breed back to the mother to see what happens. The proven het female the gave me 3 pieds last year took the year off so unfortunately I didn't get any pieds this year.
