Caught in North GA

wizbang Aug 27, 2006 11:19 AM

I thought I was chasing a young black rat but on further investigation I think it was a young black racer. Do they become darker and darker as they grow older too?

This snake was very aggressive. All black rates I've caught hae been dog tame.

I'll post 3 pics. If you are sure what it is please post.

Friendly little guy.

I'd say during our 20 mins together he only bit me about 30 times.

It is a Southern Black Racer. They do darken as they age, and just like juvenile Black Rats, they are heavily patterned when they are young...

I think the aggressiveness is par for the course for racers no matter what the age or locale. I've heard that they do lose that spotted pattern as they get older. I like the pic in front of the hoop.

He wasn't happy to be caught. Don't blame him.

Yeah! Typical racer behavior.
