Pastel Odds are they really just 50%

snarla67 Aug 27, 2006 02:26 PM

I know that breeding a pastel to normal female should produce 50% pastels and 50% normals, but so far this year I have hit on just about every clutch so far I have 18 pastels out of 25 eggs! Beginners luck or should I head to vegas!

By clutch

Clutch #1 5 eggs 1.3 pastels 0.1 normal
Clutch #4 5 eggs 1.3 pastels 0.1 normal
Clutch #5 6 eggs 0.2 pastels 2.2 normals
Clutch #8 5 eggs 2.2 pastels 0.1 normal
Clutch #11 4 eggs 4 pastels still in the egg.

Hi there,
It is only a theory......
But maybe you should have yielded 36 eggs, but only hatched 25. Did you have some go bad, or slugs, or deformed eggs? I had a small clutch of 5 eggs, and three hatched codom. That puts me over the 50% mark, so maybe I was suppose to have 6 eggs, but one didint make it. I dont know, but what I do know is genetics is just a theory.
You dont have to go to Vegas, sounds like you hit a Jackpot at home!LOL. Good luck.

Keep Breeding

if you flip a coin 10 times you should get 5 heads (say pastels) and 5 tails (say normals). Do that 10 times and let me know how many times you flip a 50%.

just to expand on that reply...

you won't necessarily hit a perfect 50%.. but the more eggs you have, the closer you will be to the 50/50. If you do the coin flipping as suggested, on the first 10 flips you may not get 50/50. However, by the end of 100 flips, you will be very close to 50/50. On 1000 flips, I'd say it is almost impossible you won't be almost a perfect 50/50. Your sample size was relatively small (under 30 eggs).

Bristen.

So far of the 25 eggs for 5 clutches 18 pasels, 7 normals. No eggs went bad and every baby hatched healthy, except one pastel that was severly kinked, and we froze. So out of 25 eggs we have 24 babies, 17 pastels and 7 normals.

The odds are 50% per egg, not necessarly per clutch. Sometimes you get lucky and have more pastals than normals, other times you can have more normals or if the python gods are punishing you, you can get all normals. Just as another poster mentioned ,you can flip a coin and with each toss, you have a 50% chance it will land on heads and a 50% change it can be tails.

So, a 4 egg clutch could just as easily yield 4 normals as it can 4 pastals, or 2:2, 1:3 etc (pastal:normal).

I would say that you hit it rather well... especially with all the females in there. Instead of going to vegas you should go buy a lotto ticket.

my first clutch I got 3 normals and 3 pastels
my second clutch (today ) I got 1 normal 5 pastels
