Great to see these snakes staying free! I share your sentiment on the thrill of the hunt over the joy of cleaning out snake sh**. In truth, I came to the sad realization that I'm just not very good at reptile husbandry. The snakes deserve better than I offer.
I haven't kept any snakes in years but still love to hunt occassionally. Watching them crawl away to freedom is much more satisfying than watching them wither away in captivity.
Don't get me wrong. I truly admire collectors who promote and protect reptiles by captive propogation and public education. I wish them the all the best and would be proud to donate any exceptional animals (if I'm ever so lucky) to a reputable breeder working with that locale.
In a perfect world:
1) Unfit keepers (like me) would stop keeping animals and limit themselves to catch and release. Of course, captive animals should NEVER be released.
2) Novice keepers would limit themselves to captive breed animals.
3) Gifted breeders would focus on locality propogation. Genetic mutations and hybrids may be interesting and attractive but they do nothing to help the species (except possibly decrease demand on wild stock).
