Mites suckkkkk!!!

midnightherps Aug 27, 2006 10:46 PM

I had mites once before a long time ago. I know a few tricks and most of the protocalls..(soaking in soapy h2o, cleaning the cages, spraying with provent-a-mite, etc) Those seem effective but are sure a pain when you have to evacuate 50 snakes. It takes hours..........

What do you experienced mite killers recomend for those pest strips I sometimes hear about. Are they effective?

Thanks

Try spraying down everything with a 0.1% solution of comercially available ivermectin. (1 mL in 1 L water). spray liberally on everything in and around the infected area twice per week for three weeks. At this concentration it is not harmful to anything but insects and arachnids. Remove all of your bedding and either don't replace it until the three weeks is over or replace it with newspaper. This seems to work with out too much effort and things should be back to normal in less than a week.

Good luck!

I use the little round bird protectors for birds you can get at the PET store and even at Wall-Mart.

Horse Fly Sprayers - I went to my local farm store and bought 2 automatic fly sprayers (one for my snake room and one for my garage (where the rats are)). They mount up on the wall and spray ever 30 mins a very small amount of a pyrthin based spray. This is the same ingredient in Provent-a-mite it doesn't harm mammels or reptiles. I have had this up for over a year and to do this date have ZERO pests. No mites or anything in the house and surprisingly no flys, spiders, mites, ticks or anything in the garage. Cost about $20 to start and $5 for refills once a month.

BTW...this is the same set up resturants use.
