DAYTONA pit report

DISCERN Aug 27, 2006 11:21 PM

Yeah yeah...a little late but so what!

I hope all is well with everyone. This year was a great year in the realms of Daytona Beach, FL. It seems that each year, the amount of certain pits I see can change. Each year is different. This show rules, and even though I may not have purcahsed as much as some of my buddies, it still was great to meet the other pit bros I talk to often and see the great animals that were for sale. I thought that there was not enough ball pythons though. ( kidding )

One interesting thing I noticed was the lack of black pines I didn't see, although there were some, but very little. However, I have never seen as many northern pines in a Daytona year as I did this year. Of course, those being my faves, I gave those extra attention when scoping tables for pits. Lots of northerns. That is a good thing.

The albino bulls were sort of few as well. It was cool to see the albino patternless bulls that Don Shores and Jim Keenan had. Different and very colorful.

I was pumped to finally meet Randy Whittington after years of seeing his pics on these forums. Very cool guy and he had some smoking jani and was one outta the two that I saw that had cape gophers.

I did see some very colorful Crumbly line red bulls and a few Kingsvilles. Scott Crumbly was a pleasure to talk to, and had a great assortment of bulls, pines, and others on sale at his table. And, the Stillwaters I saw on other tables, or hypo bulls labeled as Stillwaters, were nice. I am hoping that pure Stillwaters will still be put out onto the market on a regular basis. To me, outcrossed Stillwaters lose the locality, but still should be properly called hypo bulls.

Mark Bell had some nice patternless snows and patterned snow southerns. My quest to find a really nice albino patterned southern pine however was lost though, as I didn't see one this year for sale anywhere.

The two breeders I saw with the most pits were John Meltzer and John Schmitt/Suncoast Herps. I was at their tables so much I might as well should have chipped in for some of the table rent..lol..

Schmitt's yearling hypo deppeis were smoking! Wow is all I can say! His yearling Stillwater hypos were nice as well, as well as everything he had from his Sherman hypo bulls and albino bulls. I picked up from him, a killer northern pine with some different brownish blotches and a perfect blairs grayband.

John Meltzer had the most locality pits and snakes at the show, and they were very unique in all aspects. MN. bulls, Kankakee bulls, a few Kane Strain cape gophers, MN. hognoses, which were very nice as well, and Burlington Co. northerns. Also, his outcrossed Iowa hypo bulls were jaw dropping. From him I obtained one of those outcrossed hypo Iowa bulls, and an incredible Burlington northern.

Nokturnel Tom had the only ghost and blizzard Sonorans I saw there. Sonorans in general seemed few.

Great year, and I can't wait till next year. Feaster, get yourself there next year!

Take care!

Not sure I would qualify Stillwaters as locality rather than morph. Just my opinion, but to my knowledge, no one really knows for sure that the bull saved at that roundup was from Stillwater do they? It is possible that it could have been taken from as far away as 60-80 miles which would definitely not be a Stillwater locality right?

I do agree with you though that the Stillwater to Stillwater breedings produce incredible animals.

Billy,it was nice seeing you again, and meeting Randy.

Sorry I could not chat longer, family commitments limited me to less than a half day there and we were running through, as it turned out I bought my Sonoran at 4:59.

The Daytona show was a bustling crowd of people from every walk of life, everything from the soccer mom to Tattoo Pete. (cool to chat with). Meeting people is sometimes the best part at the shows. Seeing all the cool new projects is something that everybody looks forward to. This year was a good show, but honestly not much different than last year.

I thought that alot of the "very high end" boas and ball pythons were rare, but it seemed that they were on every table. To me, the were slightly reduced in number. Tim Thomas unloaded his nice red adults and only had LA pines (???)(adults) there this year. Ben Seigel didn't seem to have much in way of pits either, except that he bought out another vendors albino bulls.

The vendors that Billy mentioned had a nice variety but Peace River Herps had alot of the San Diego gopher morphs as well as some Texas outcrossed Stillwaters. Suffolk Herps also had some pits, but these were all somewhat generic. (everything was just put into male and female tubs).

Hopefully we'll see more new morphs come out soon.

Thanks for the update Billy, always good to hear how everything went pit wise down there. I am really hoping to make it next year with this new job, we shall see come next spring how things are going. I think pits would have been the only thing i would have had if i did go this year, those and a few greeri, agalma and pyros. I would have liked to seen the patternless snow southerns, should have some double hets for those that actually started hatching this morning and I can't wait to breed them back to each other. Those hypo deppei are killer aren't they, i have a 2 year old here and it just blows me away when I have it out. I'll keep you posted on next year Billy and will give you a call here soon. In case you wanted a cape I attached a pic for you just to tempt you, hahahaha

Have a good one!
