Are you going to be at the chicago this year? I am hoping you will be there with your gaboon again....

Yes, I will be at NARBC with a nice big venomous display (education only of course). We are going to bring a few new animals but I am planning on bringing our big gaboon. The only reason why I won't is if she is going into a shed cycle and I have no control over thought so keep your fingers crossed. Other snakes I am hoping to bring include:
- king cobra
- black paki cobra
- jameson's mamba
- saw scaled viper
- various rattlesnakes
and some other suprises plus some really cool stuff from Steve Brown of the St. Louis Herp Society who will be joining me again this year. Should be a lot of fun.

Rob, how big is your gaboon??? Ihave a female creeping up on 7 feet.... She is a monster...

Carmichael Aug 28, 2006 06:20 PM

WOW!! That is indeed a monster; our's is not quite that big but she's still an impressive beast. Can you post a pic or two of this big gal? Our gaboon was found in a dumpster in Chicago; an incredible story but a rather concerning one as well.

Have you seen the new venemous issue of Reptiles magazine? It has an awesome article on Gaboons with good husbandry info. The author brings up an interesting concept. That is the one of proper hydration. He said that he mists twice a week, injects water into feeder rodents, and soaks the snake weekly. He feeds weekly as well outside of the cage.

I will most definitely cross my fingers for no shed cycle. And by the way that article was awesome in reptiles magazine - I read it cover to cover at least three times since ive been interested in getting a gabby for the past year.

Holy cow, found in a dumpster in Chicago!!!!!

Could you give me an idea of where? (specifically if possible)

Carmichael Aug 29, 2006 11:39 AM

Yeah, this particular snake had a very interesting story. I can't provide the details as far as location as that is confidential information, however, she was in horrible shape when we found her (emaciated, dehydrated, coated with paint and other debris, RI, she was a mess).

GREGG: I meant to tell you earlier that you did a great job on the article. Although you do things a bit differently than I do, your info was rock solid! Nice job.

Thank you very much Rob... I am glad you got to take a look at it... I thank you for the good review...
As far as you and I doing things a bit differently goes, well I guess all of us self taught hot keepers do things differently... As long as the important husbandry requirements are fulfilled... Thats what counts... What ever works, as long as the animals are in prime health...

Thankyou for responding, I understand.

If "Chicago area" is as close as you can narrow it down then fine.

I'm just glad whomever found the snake didn't try to pick it up etc.

Whatever information you CAN share (ie. Found in western suburbs by a garbage man) would be appreciated.

P.S. I look forward to visiting your facilities hopefully around Christmas this year as I've never seen a bushmaster on display before.

About as close as I can tell you is in the Chicago area and closer to the O'Hare Airport location....makes you wonder. Give me some heads up when you are visiting so I can make sure that I am there.
