Very dark maroon MSP

rick millspaugh Aug 28, 2006 11:53 AM

Every year one or two of these show up, not as “flashy” as the lighter or brighter colors but cool nonetheless. I wonder if this could be selectively bred even darker?

Man, these pictures look worst than I thought, sorry they are so blurry, I'm going to have to wear my stupid dang "old man" glasses next time. Again, the orange hue is from the sun setting when I took the pictures; it is not anything I did on purpose.

I think that's more of an original color and I've seen it in both milksnake phase and leonis, particularly in 1st and 2nd generation offspring from wild. Should be fairly easy to work with and darken up I would think. I have an F2 from wild male a little like that... rich dark red and it definitely is a cool color. Raise one up and see what happens.

Rick, I like the msp, I think this one is really nice. I like the bright orange and yellows. I really love the msp's and razor thin bands any color. But I find the ones I love to just stare at all day is the natural earthy hues, I don't know why they just grab me. I guess I am still stuck back in the day when they didn't have all these bright colors. I was thrilled when Tim at Vivid brought the earthy ones back.
take care Michelle

Here's one like that I got from you last year. Even has the "overspray" on the partial bands! I likey.

Oh, wait, they are - LOL. He still looks good.

If I had more room, I think it would be interesting to take some of these deep colored MSP and work a few generations to see how deep the color could go, maybe near black? or...?

I have the female that you gave me last year that is his twin. Since she has the bobtail I'd be inclined to keep her offspring anyway. I think I'll toss them together and see what happens. Here's another shot of him.

Rick sent me this sweetie for nothing since she had a twisted tail tip. She shows their true color better in this picture.

I am reasonably sure it was temp related. I kept my temps lower this year (79 to no more than 82) and did not have any problems. I would try a test breeding, if it shows up, never breed her again.
