Sick Forest Cobra Update

kaouthia Aug 04, 2003 05:10 PM

I am still awaiting results from the blood test for the OPV virus. The snake is still alive. Would a snake showing symptoms last more then 2 weeks? From all the accounts of the virus that I can find once the snakes starts showing symptoms it usally dies with in a few days. He stays hidden most of the time but when he is out he still hoods up at me and watches me intently. What else could be causing neurological disorders? How accurate is the bloodtest? My vet is telling me that I should euthenize the animal and have a necropsy done. I dont want to kill the animal for no reason. At what point should I consider that? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I got bloodtest results today for the snake. It turned up very positive for paramixelvirus. What is weird is the snake looked great for the past few days. The vet came today and euthized him. What is the next step? I was considering have random blood tests done on my collection. If there is an issue when shold I expect animals to start dropping dead?

Oh my, I'm very sorry for you.

Random blood tests would be a good idea in my opinion, also observe your animals closely, oce one even looks a bit odd, take it to the vet and get it checked.

Unfortunately Paramyxo is almost impossible to erradicate, some people have euthanised their entire collection and gotten rid of the enclosures and tools. And had to start all over again.

As I mentioned in an earlier post I do know someone with good results after vaccinating his animals....

Wish you the best, sorry 'bout your snake

Peter
