How hard is it to breed silkworms?

quincy Aug 28, 2006 03:30 PM

Id like to order a colony of about 500. Would that be a good start? Also how much would I expect to spend on premade food?
I do have mulberry trees but not in winter so I would need to buy till spring...Also do they stink like crickets?

I've raised them up from eggs to moths, and they didnt stink nearly as much as keeping crickets. Nor do silkworms make noise. I've never bred them though, so I dont know what a good starting colony would be. I just let some of mine pupate and become moths because 1: good learning experience for my young neices and 2: chameleons like moths. Make sure you have enough mulberry leaves to feed the worms from start to finish. Once they taste real leaves they dont tend to take to the re-hydrated powdered stuff. So it's essentially one or the other.
