loads of toads?

Rouen Aug 29, 2006 09:17 AM

the past few weeks I've been finding toads in my yard, I have nothing against them and they were actually the first animal I ever kept on my own, the problem is I have to mow the lawn, and with so many 1" toads hopping around I'm afraid I'll run them over, over the past week and a half I have caught 15 little ones within 100 square feet and 2 wood frogs, is there anything I can put in the yard to get them to stay in a certain area so I can possibly mow the rest of the lawn without too much of a problem?
and do toads have a homing instinct, I raised over 200 toadlets this spring and relocated them to a better habitate, is it possible the ones I am finding are the ones I raised, other than that I dont know where they could have come from.

they do have a strong homing instinct but will usually only return when its time to breed, if you were to mow the lawn then do it during the day when the sun is bright and on a dry day and search it for any toads first.

I found 3 out in my garden during the hottest part of the day during a heat wave(3 days at or over 90 degrees F)
that was also when I found the adult woodfrog, scouring the yard for them is nearly impossible I tried it once and I nearly chopped the legs off of one, I've been relocating them across our river it's pretty heavily wooded on the other side and I know there are tons of things for them to eat, whats the likelyhood of them trying to swim back across?
