ATB caging

Does anyone see any reason why a plywood or melamine cage lined with 1/16 inch plexi not work for ATB's
I'd love to get a plastic cage but for the size I am wanting I just cant afford the price.

Plastic cages just about last forever, whereas wood cages may not depending on the construction and how much moisture sits in the cage. Even an unsealed plywood cage will work. It just depends on how long you want the cage to last.

The problem areas are the seams and corners on the cage floor. If you can keep those sealed, then you will likely have a long lasting cage. Covering the cage floor is a good idea, but you must seal all around the floor piece. PVCx is great for the cage floor. You can get a piece at sign shops.

The toughest wood cage I've made to date is also the ugliest. It is plywood with Bondo polyster filler put all along the floor seams and corners. Looks terrible, but the substrate does cover most of it. That one cage has taken a beating moisture-wise but seems unaffected. I used semi-gloss paint in the interior. I used exterior plywood which may account for the moisture resistance.

use some sort of vinyl film to laminate the melamine vs using plexy. One is cost and two the film comes in a variety of different colors. It would be just like building the enclosures on www.finegtps.com. Instead of MDF you would use melamine and instead of contact paper you would use the vinyl film.

The vinyl film is actually a far superior product than the current contact paper available. Best sources for the fil include the interenet and local sign shops. The vinyl film is used to make window decals and signage.

Good Luck
