Will king snakes eat other constrictors

poison1981 Aug 29, 2006 03:14 PM

I was just wondering in the wild will king snakes take on other constrictors like rat snake pine and or bull snakes ? Even if these snakes are the same size or larger?

A king snake will take on any snake it thinks it can kill and eat, assuming it is hungry. That includes gopher snakes and rat snakes.

This yearling ate his own brother on the way to a reptile show in the same deli cup. It was not done at my hand. I would never trust an Eastern Kingsnake with another snake. I am smarter than that. Well just a little. The big one being held by me is a WC "for awhile" then released back in the same area by Peter Jolles. Derek

Derek - LOL

Wish I could go to the Deli and pick up a Cup-O-Kings.

No wonder he ate his brother - Lots of tasty things come in deli cups!

That is too funny!!! My wife wants us to call them herp, reptile or snake cups instead of deli cups. She thinks it's wierd to call the Deli cups. She is definatelt not a herper. Derek

Simple answer, yes.

Kingsnakes can eat snakes (even constrictors) bigger than themselves (by a little..).

I fed a eastern king a gopher snake last year... Gopher snakes are constrictors.

Although I'm sure adult racers can snatch up a baby kingsnake if they wanted to. Evens it out, a little lol. Simply put, kingsnakes will eat anything they can across.

Why isnt the larger gopher snake able to prevent itself from being eaten?

I have a feeling that a kingsnake (even a very hungry one) wouldn't attempt to eat a gopher snake bigger than itself. Gopher snakes are huge in size compared to an adult kingsnake, and are usually bigger in girth, and length.

I fed a 2' gopher snake to a 3' king.

Out in nature, I have seen gopher snakes and bull snakes just give in and try the hide my head thing...doesn't work! They are great bluffers and if the animal backs off a bit, they bluff more but if the predator goes for the kill, seems they just give up the ghost.
