need sub-adult nosy-be weigh comparisons

lele Aug 29, 2006 05:17 PM

Cyrus is surely active, but he seems to do it in lieu of eating. I have gotten to the point that I will not let him out until he has eaten and pooped (OK, sometimes I let the poop thing go, but that's when he ends up doing it from his gym and lands on my desk, work, other cages, floor - which I don't find until I step in it!)

Anyway, he is 8 1/2 months and weighs 88g. He seems thin, eats a super or two/day, phoenix worms, (which are small and don't add up to much, and has lost interest in crickets. I ordered some waxworms to help get Darwin's weight up before he brumates.

Since I can only compare Cyrus to Luna - which is no comparison on any level: species, gender, health.

btw, recent fecal was clean as a whistle!

Would like to hear weights of other male nosy be around his age to knwo if he is on track. I sure don;t have to worry about him getting fat!

thanks,
lele

Hi Lele,

88 grams @ 8 1/2 months sounds pretty good to me. Nosy Be are generally smaller than most other Panthers. I don't think you need to worry about him right now. With most of my male Panthers the trend is to eat well up until about 10 months, then start dreaming about females and forget to eat. Not all of them do this, but a good majority do. You're on easy street right now, enjoy it. Valerie.

then start dreaming about females and forget to eat.
lol!!!

he's never been a big eater, but I'd rather have him on the thin rather than fat side. I cannot believe how active he is, not content to stay still for more than a few minutes!

thanks,
lele

here is a link to his pics on webshots. The bottom of page one and page two are the most recent. he looks fat in his sleep pics, but he is all balled up - and so sweet Some of the other ones show his leanness.
Cyrus

Go by his body condition rather than weight. If his casque is bulging SLIGHTLY, and his tail is not round, that's good. If there are lots of wrinkles behind his head, and around his legs, as well as a thick line of fat along his back, along the top of his ribcage, he might be a bit chubby. Also - their feet are excellent markers. IF they are thin and flat - good. I they are fat, padded and look like they are swollen, they're probably too chubby too.

They hold a LOT of fat in their livers, and that can be very bad for them - cuts their lives short.

Thanks Eric,

I'm more concerned about him being to thin and only commeneted that he looks chubby when sleeping b/c he si such a little ball.

If you look at the link I gave in last post you'll see his skinny pics (ignore the sleeping position ones). His spine seems very pronounced (check other forum for more details), but I only have Luna to comapre him to which is like apples and oranges!

Thanks for those tips - did not know about the feet!

lele...in picture DSCN5660 he looks great! Good head pads, good fat stores, but not too fat! It was good to see pictures of him!

yeah, I have been really bad about keeping up with pics. This time of year my camera is mainly focused on my wild silk moths.

The one you mentioned he was ready for bed and looked damn near perfect! The next pic of Cyrus makes him look gravid! lol! It was a funny angle when he was sleeping. He has a great personality, fine with handling, sneaks around to get back out of cage if I forget to close the upper panel! He also does not get upset when I bring Darwin in to hang out on the window sill. Cyrus just stays high in his vine near the ceiling, might puff up for a second but then he's OK. Sweet boy
