cleaning snakes

zhivago97 Aug 29, 2006 05:48 PM

I know this is bizarre, but I only have 1 snake and like to hold him and work with him to keep him docile. But he isn't very smart and crawls through his poop if I don't clean it up immediately. I know he doesn't need to be treated like a baby but my previous snakes at least seemed to know enough to avoid their own poop.

Is there a way to clean snakes? I let him crawl through a warm, wet towel which helped, which was like a sponge bath for him but without soap. With my previous snakes I let them soak in lukewarm water.

Just curoius what options are available.

Tom

I use warm wet paper towels then let them move through them. Derek

If by bizarre, you mean only keeping one snake and interacting with it, I'd have to say maybe you have more going for you than many of us that keep too many and spend precious little time with them other than for cleaning. (to each his own. )

I have been using a dilute 50/50 mix of listerine and water for cleaning for years. (it works great on the glass) I use Chlorhexidine now but still use it for the glass and occassionally spray some on a paper towel and let a snake crawl through it without having ever had any problems with it that I have noticed.

Some of my fondest memories of snakes I've kept were when I had just a few and spent more time with them. Some would argue they should be left alone and not stresed and maybe even keeping them in a totaly " natural" setting is the only way to go but we are facinated with herps and corny as it sounds, interacting with them especially because they are so different from the rest of our daily world is a real thrill/ blessing.

Good luck,
Bob.
