Dumeril's birthday!

bytheshore1 Aug 29, 2006 08:01 PM

Our female was overdue by at least a couple of weeks. 8-25-06 she had 16 HUGE babies! They came out shedding their 1st skin. She had been laying on her side she was so miserable. This is her 1st time and I thought this was a lot of babies. The female is about 4 1/2 years old and has a nubbed tail so we were hoping everything would go good. It did and then some. Now if I can just get them all eating. 3 already did. I have not sexed them yet till after they all eat. Hoping for a nice ratio. What does everybody think? Tim

It's awesome isn't it!!! As everyone can see by the pic, baby dumerils definitely don't just sit around in one big pile after they're born like typical BCI litters. I think they look great, and call me strange, but I really like the darker reduced pattern animal toward the back left of the pic. I'll bet that one is a male! By the way, I generally sex them as I pull them out of the mothers cage using the spurs/no spurs method. They can be HARD to see at this point, but you'll get good at knowing where to find them after you do a few of them. Spurs-males No spurs-females. I've had people argue this, but I've never raised one based on this and had it turn out wrong. Well, regardless....MAJOR CONGRATS!!!! Job well done, now reward momma with a king sized ratcicle. LOL, take care

Much thanks to both of you. I fed Mom a couple of small rats the day after and she let me know it was time for a large one so I thawed a jumbo and she sucked it down and smiled! You are right about the pics not capturing all the beauty of these snakes. About half have really bright orange highlights and bright white spots. Verry docile.you can contact me direct through my username. Thanks for the advice on sexing. I will go thru them again tonight. Tim
