Couple of locality kings....

Phil Peak Aug 29, 2006 08:37 PM

Took a couple of photo's during my routine cage maintenance today. First a Jefferson county L.g.nigra from the Knobs region of Kentucky. I really like this snake. She has the classic dark and shiny scalation the black kingsnake is known for.

And a Hardin county KY prairie kingsnake from the old field habitat outside of the Knobs region. This is a four foot male that I have heard some refer to as the gun metal phase.

Hope you enjoyed!

Phil

Hey Phil, great looking snakes! I will be waiting to hear from you next year for a nigra pair hopefully! That calli-g is nice, you win so far this year but fall is comin' soon and I may find that tall Texan yet!
Great pics!

Thanks Todd. I have a mate for that nigra from the same locale so I should have babies next year. He's a big ole hulking brute thats well over 4' and feeds on rats.

Speaking of calligaster, we made an interesting observation on Sunday. We found a big one under a large piece of metal that had recently eaten a huge meal. We tried to disturb him as little as possible and get a few quick pics, but it was obvious the big meal was coming up. Turned our to be an adult mole.

Good luck this Fall! We are looking forward to getting out at this time as much as possible.

Good timing Phil. I was just admiring Mark's black king in the post below. Your Jefferson co. animal is a textbook example of a solid jet black nigra. Do you have that one pictured on your website?
I'll post an updated pic of my 05 Tenn. locality nigra. I believe mine is developing into a solid black animal, but I'll let you give me your opinion on how my young male is turning out.
Also that adult prairie king has better contrast then some of the other specimens you find in the field. Beautiful animal.

Thanks Steve. There is not a photo of her on the website, but I should probably put one up. We have a huge amount of updates that will be going up once Scott is able to free up some time.

I really like your black kingsnake. Beautiful snake that is very dark and glossy!

For a large Kentucky locale calligaster, he is very well marked. I believe his offspring are even more so. These are young adults around three years old now. I'll try to get some pics of them up.

Wow! Those are both really beautiful. The slick black dorsal coloration of the nigra is sweet. I haven't seen many that clean. I like the Prairie King too. I have a thing for earth tone colored snakes. Both WC right?

Thanks! Yes, both of these snakes are wild caught and I have mates for both of them from the same locale that form the basis of my breeding stock. I'll try and put some pics of these up soon.
