Python likes it cooler?

salemserpent Aug 30, 2006 12:17 AM

Forgive me for asking a strange question but I have a 5 month old male ball python and he seems to dwell on the cool side of his cage. I have checked and double check its temps with my heat gun and digital theometer-both day and night.Temps are fine. He has a fantastic feeding response and sheds fine. He has 3 hides - one on each side (warm and cool and a humidity hide) It does spend some time on the warmer side (usually right after feeding) and then right over to the cool side.

Does anybody elses ball do this? I wouldn't normally be asking but, here in Salem,MA we've had temps in the low to mid sixties with the temp dropping 5 to 10 degrees at night for the past week and a half.

As long as your temps are fine, he'll decide what he wants to do.
No worries.

Temps have been dropping here too. (CT)
Fall is coming.

Thanks. None of my other reptiles are doing this. To be expected this time of year I guess. Fall does seem to be coming in really quickly this year.

We're going to have another BRUTAL New England winter...
I can feel it in my bones.

Meh...I've been here 25 years. If I'm not used to it yet I should move.

(I'm 25 years old. Haha)

I've got the same thing with mine, If I need to do anything with her she's on the colder side of the box. She has a hide on each side ( hot and cold ) and as with yours she does use the hot side after she has fed. I live in north Wales so we are pretty used to not having hot temps almost year round. The only plus side that I have found is that when I get her out to handle her she enjoys the heat from my hands and is great to handle. As to why she prefers the cooler side i do not know, but as one of your earlier replies stated the snake has the option and so must be where she feels the most comfortable.

good luck

Both of mine are doing the same thing, their warm side is in the mid to upper 80s but they stay on the other end. They have felt somewhat chilly to the touch, but are eating every week and havent had any problems.

here in delightful southern california it's been getting HOTTER the closer we get to fall. been close to 100 at the house almost every day the past two weeks. it's been so warm in the house i almost don't need to turn on any sort of heating in the tank. my snakes are chillin in the cooler side too, although since their cooler side during the day ranges between 80 and 85 degrees, i can't say i blame them!

i cannot WAIT for fall to kick in.
