Question about how often to feed a baby

railrider1920 Aug 30, 2006 06:40 PM

Hi folks,
I got a couple of baby corns from Kathy Love almost a month ago. I believe they were hatched 5/28/06(the date on the top of the deli cup), making them about 3 months old. I work a really strange schedule. I'm on the road for a few days then I'm home for a few. My wife won't feed mice to anything, so I have to. I usually try to feed them when I get home and then again right before I leave. They have been getting a pinky each. I was looking at a calender and it turns out they are eating one day, then get another 4 days later. The next feeding is 5 days later. The next feeding would be 4 days later. For example
Fed on monday the 1st.
Then fed on Friday the 4th
Next feeding on Wed the 9th
Next on sunday the 13th.

So far it seems to be working out ok. They both take the pinks well and fairly quickly. The small lump is usually gone from sight maybe a day or two after feeding, but I'm not sure because they both pretty much stay in hiding most of the time. They are handled, but right now not very much. I know that there are no hard and fast rules, but in your opinion, does this sound like a decent feeding schedule?
Thanks,
Rob

as long as they are eatting... i feed mine once a week....some people every 5 days.... it really depends on the owner or "guardian" (i think that word is stupid, but its becoming a thing here in va)

Sounds good to me. Once they get older you can cut it back to once a week, even less as they reach adult size. FWIW I feed my hatchlings every 5-7 days :*)

If it poops it may be ready to feed again. My babies poop once a week andshorty after start searching for food. Once a week sounds right to me!

That feeding schedule sounds perfect to me. I don't always follow the "rules" though... This is what I did.

I fed my hatchlings 2x a week. I fed them Monday and Friday. If you are not carefull you will over feed them. It is important to note that I fed them INappropriate sized meals. I fed them a smaller pinky on Monday and a VERY small pinky on Friday. It is my belief that you can't over-feed a hatchling since all of their energy is used for growth. I also believe that MORE smaller meals are more easily digested than ONE large meal. I don't condone this feeding schedule through the entire snakes life. Your snake will get fat and have a lower quality of life. Most people go by the 1 meal every 5-7 days "rule" but my method has worked great for me. Also, note that there is a fine line between keeping a snake well fed and power feeding. It is your responsability to examine your snakes growth rate and decide what is best for the snake. If you think the schedule you're on is too much.....slow it down. Your snake will give you hints when it is time to eat. With Hope.... If she is out of her hide, she's hungry!

And also, if you do decide to go with this route.... Order f/t! I was paying $80 a month just to feed 6 snakes. I hate having to go to pet shops to get food but am too poor to pay the s/h for frozen feeders. I did the math (which is scary) and would be saving almost $550 a year going to f/t.

That has helped out. I'm thinking that I'll cut it back a little. I don't want to let them get really really hungry, but I would like to see them at least a little. Mayby if they are a little hungry, they'll come out some more.
Thanks again for your thoughts & opinions
