New Chameleon

pixie343 Aug 31, 2006 02:06 PM

I have been thinking about getting a new veild female to replace my girl that has passed away and I would like it if you guys could give some advice on choosing, like what age would be the best and things to look for. I want to make sure that I am getting the best and healthiest I can get.

My male is the veild chameleon subspecies, if I where to get a normal veild female and they were to breed would there be any ill affects for the babies. I'm only asking because it is a little hard to tell with females.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "veiled subspecies". There is only one species...Chamaeleo calyptratus found in captivity as far as I know. There are more and more color morphs in captivity, but these are not true subspecies and they can breed.

When looking for a new female, look for one that has not been grown too fast (overfed with large prey items so they can sell it at a younger age), and look for one that is 4-5 months old rather than a tiny baby. Female veileds can breed at a pretty young age, but it isn't a good idea to force breeding sooner than a year. A quality breeder will know the bloodlines back for several generations,be careful not to inbreed his own animals, and not force his females to breed too young.
