UV LIGHTING NECESSARY

bob_the_snowman Aug 04, 2003 08:47 PM

Hello everyone, we were just wondering if it is necessary to provide uv lighting for our uros. I've heard different stories from everyone about it. We supplement their crickets with cricket dust with d3 in it ? is that good enough?

i have heard different opinions from breeders also. But i always think what is an extra $18 dollars? Thats just my opinion, but i mean i would think it is a little more natural. Goodluck!

I'd say no, that's not enough. Both of my cages are set up with UVHeat's bulbs and the Uros get a weekly light dusting of a vitamin supplement. They eat well so I see no reason to supplement at all, really.

Anyway, when one of their bulbs burns out (which has only happened twice, mind you) I'll replace temporarily with a common flood lamp and set the temperatures correctly. They hate the regular light bulb and will sulk and hide until I put another UVB-producing bulb of some kind in the cage.

So while nobody can say yet, for sure, if UVB is absolutely necessary in addition to D3 supplements (in fact, even the breeders seem to disagree with each other), the animals themselves are much happier with UVB present. Good enough for me.
