breeders in michigan?

dezogsky Sep 01, 2006 03:39 PM

hello! I live in southwestern michigan, near Grand Rapids, and am very interested in buying a rainbow boa. I am having a hard time finding a breeder near my area, and was wondering if anyone knew of one? I am not completely closed to the idea of mail-order, but I would much rather see the boa and how it's handled/cared for before I make a purchase. I am also not completely closed to the idea of a pet store, but would prefer a breeder who has experience and knowledge of rainbow boas. am willing to travel, within reason, so any breeders located in west michigan would also be great!

thanks in advance for any help offered!

so I can't help you with the "want to hold it and see the facility" thing. BTW, not a bad way to go if you can. Then you can see adults and also how they've been cared for.

IMO DO NOT buy from a petstore. First off, pet stores have a bad rep for not knowing how to take care of BRB's. AND, they get stuff in at wholesale (usually from a broker that bought them from someone else) along with stuff from many locations.
Most breeders I have dealt with are very cautious about disease and bugs. Only ones I have EVER gotten in with bugs came from resellers.

One option would be a reptile show? Must be something somewhat nearby?

If you do go with a BRB breeder, there are many on this forum and on KS in general and I can't say anything bad about any of them. And not just because KS won't let me!! I would (and have many times) go with a small to medium size breeder that really wants to place his/her babies, not just sell them. They will give you the best customer service (IMHO).

NARBC at Tinley Park is not to far off.. It is a bit of a road trip for you, but shouldn't be to bad. You never know what you will find there, but I would be suprised if there weren't atleast a few tables w/ BRB's on em.
