Possible Axanthic x Albino ??

Melinda666 Sep 01, 2006 06:29 PM

I've got a beautiful female Albino. A friend has a possible axanthic. I say possible because it has not been proven, but looks promising.

I'm thinking of dinking around with them and seeing what pops out. Hold back the females and a couple males and see what comes out of them. I know there is a 1 in 16 chance of a Snowball. What in the world will the others be?? double hets? possible double hets?

My brain hurts just trying to figure it out. I know someone has it already figured out somewhere online, but I can't remember where.

The babies would be 100% Het Albino, nothing more nothing less until you prove out the Axanthic. Then, if the Axanthic proves out, you would have Double Het Snows instead of 100% Het Albinos.

Thank you for the info. Nerd has a great tutorial on genetics. Unfortunately, my brain is completely fried (70's) and I can't seem to retain the info. So if the Axanthic proves out, then I will have double hets. Out of a dh x dh breeding I get the following

1 normal
2 het albino
2 het axanthic
4 double hets
1 albino
1 axanthic
2 albino het axanthic
2 axanthic het albino
1 snowball

What would be my next step with these babies? Breed the snowball to?? Oh boy, I can tell I'm gonna need lots more room/racks.

I would not waste a female albino on trying to prove out a WC axanthic. I would breed him to a normal and use your female for somting proven.

Yep, it sure is a hard decision. This fella sure looks axanthic, but I'm just not sure. I will breed him to a few normals this year. Best case scenario is 100% het axanthics, then I would need to breed the females back to daddy to prove him out. arrghhhh decisions decisions LOL

I disagree with the previous poster. If the female albino is ready to go now, why not put that male with her if you want a snow? The reason I say go for it is simple. If you breed the male to normals this year and produce hets you will have another 2 1/2 years before you even know if he is an axanthic for sure. Then if he proves out you are still another 2 1/2 -3 1/2 years from trying for your snows. So in the meantime after all this breeding you have been doing to prove out your guy you end up finding out he was an axanthic like you thought to begin with and you are kicking yourself because you could have had snow's in 2 1/2 years not 5 1/2 years. The only reason I would pass up the possible axanthic x albino breeding is if I had a pied, black pastel, spider or genetic stripe to put with her this year.

That is what I am saying. I would breed the female to something proven. If you really want a snow I would even buy a visual VPI line axanthic male before I bred a wc that looks axanthic. If it were my animal it would be bred to a male pied. IMO a breeder albino female is too valuable to breed with anything that is unproven. If that axanthic does not prove out you wasted 3 years and all you end up with is a few het albinos. Not worth the risk IMO.
