The Hatchlings are Here

twilightfade212 Sep 01, 2006 10:48 PM

Today, Day 73, I went outside and found three baby box turtles. Greatest feeling of my life. That was me a few posts down asking if I was just impatient. Yes I was. They finally came up though. Despite having downpours last weekend, it got pretty dry during the week. Yesterday I sprinkled some water over the nest, and today they all decided to come up. I'm really excited. This is my first time to raise hatchlings, so everyone can expect plenty of questions coming from me. I'll go ahead with the first one...

Each hatchling has little spots on its shell and one has a white spot on its head, and not like the kind I've seen in pictures. I think these hatchlings were underground for awhile since they don't have any visible yolk sac. Is it possible that this is some type of fungus? Will this go away since the hatchlings are so small.

Thanks for your time.

spotty markings are normal, usually they disappear by the time they start to develope their adult color, nothing at all to worry about.

Thanks for the help. Glad to see yours are starting to hatch, too.
