boas for dummies?

happycamper06 Sep 01, 2006 11:44 PM

ok is there anyway that someone can either add some nice pointy arrows with photoshop explaining to me what excatly "peaks" and "saddles" and such are with boas? or direct me to a site that has the info? i see a lot of people posting how they "love the peaks" or wow those saddles are awesome" but i feel like an idiot when i have no clue as to what anyone is talking about specifically.

The saddles are the DARKER parts to the pattern on the back. (should be pretty self explanatory with the pic that is included)

the "peaks" or "widdows peaks" are the parts of the center of the saddle that pertrude in either direction.

hope that helps

dorsal rows, subcaudals, and ventrals?

danktat Sep 02, 2006 01:33 AM

rows are sometimes used to identify snake species and subspecies...counting the # of scales from one point to another can be helpful in identification.

ventrals are the long side-to-side scales that cover the belly of the snake.

subcaudals are the ventral scales after the cloaca (on the tail) used in identifying the sex of a snake. When inserting a probe the depth is measured by how many of those scales the probe reaches before it can no longer be moved further back. Females tend to have much shallower penetrating depth than do males, hence: fewer subcaudals back.
