Adult Female Iowa Bullsnake

She was caught by a construction worker friend of mine who found her while digging in a ditch. The other workers wanted to kill her but he would not let them. Instead he brought her to me. My plan was to feed her a few times then take her back to where she came from. About a month later she laid twenty eggs! She was so small I did not even think she was or even could be gravid. She is only about four feet and was only as big around as a large cornsnake. She is bigger now do to frequent feedings. Anyway, all of the eggs hatched and the babies were released on farms where the farmers would not kill them.
She is more tame than any CB bull I have ever seen. She hissed the first day and that was it. I can't even get her to vibrate her tail anymore. She eats prekilled or frozen thawed rats or mice readily. I am starting to think she may need to stay with me for the winter to get fattened up.

Great looking snake. I grew up in Iowa and ended up with a big soft spot for pits and bulls in particular! I rememeber so many times encountering wild bulls that would hiss abit and then behave as though they had been raised in captivity.

That "kill any snake" mentality always sadens me. You could not ask for a better rat trap on your acreage, or back woods yet killing them is such a common response.

cheers, Ginter
