Bulbs for light without heat?

replover Sep 02, 2006 02:25 PM

Hi, are there any bulbs out there that produce light but not heat? I have a cage that needs to be a bit brighter in lighting but the temps are already right and in fact on the high end for what is being kept in it.

Preferably this would screw into a light bulb socket as I have them already in the cage. If there is no such bulb that produces light but not heat, I will go with a florescent I guess.

They make flouresants that screw into standard sockets. they are meant to replace traditional incandesant light bulbs. I use them all over my house and they put off very low heat but awesome light. I would try those.

You will never find a bulb that puts off no heat but the flouresants put off extreamly low heat so they will be you best bet.

Good Luck

Thanks! Would you happen to have a photo or product number and brand of the lowest heat screw on flourescent then? I know it sounds stupid for me to ask, but living here in China it does no good for me to go out asking for these things in English as most people here don't speak it. Hope it isn't too much to ask. Are they the ones that look like spiral cones?

I went out to look at some florescent tubes last night and it seems that they DO feel hot to the touch. They don't make you go "YIKES!" like incandescent bulbs but it is hot and I would think that it may cause the ambient temperatures to rise?

The flourescent lights do put of some heat, it depends on the wattage. A 15 watt flour. is equal to a 45 watt incandesent in how moch lumines it puts out (give or take, its close to a 3:1 ratio). Some of the bulbs are spiraled but they also have ones which look like a standard light bulb. They even have ones which mimic natural daylight. If you want extra light that is the best route at this time, as anything running on eletricity gives off heat.

Rather pricey, but LED bulbs are available and about as close to "no heat" as you can get.

I agree LED's are awesome but pricy, but they last a long time. So a $30 bulb lasts 30,000hrs thats 4 years if run 24/7 pretty good. $7.50 a year how much do you spend on 60watt bulbs now. Plus they still qualify for energy tax acredidation.

Ok I know those seen them in stores.
Do they give off enough heat to warrant a light guard or not?

Heat or no heat, I would always put a guard around any bulb placed inside a cage. Even if the bulb doesn't get hot enough to burn you don't want an animal coming into contact with it and possibly breaking the bulb and then injuring itself on broken glass - it's been known to happen.
