how do i inject medicine into my turtle?

machinehien Aug 04, 2003 09:36 PM

Hi the vet gave me some antibiotics to inject into my RES (she has a respitory infection) When he showed me how to do it, he did it fast and easy, grabbing a front leg holding it down and jabbing the needle in the shoulder.

I wasn't able to get hold of her leg and just settled for jabbing it in some loose skin behind her front leg. I am not sure if the needle went in correctly and she urinated which did not happen in the vet office. She then made a earnest attempt to nip at me, she;s about six inches so I imagine she can break the skin if she could. I was curious if there were any tricks to doing this?

Any pointers from any experienced owners would be greatly appreciated.

You can use a towel over the head and grab a foot with folds of the towel between the leg and the head. Then, while holding on tightly to the foot/leg, you can take your time to locate the area that the vet used. Only inject into a front leg and alternate legs between doses. If need be, call the vet back and ask for an explination. A vet should be willing to help you with that.

You are probably using injectible baytril and if she eliminated waste and nipped at you you got it into her most likely.
It is a painful injection and that was probably her reaction to the sting of it.

Katrina's instructions are right on the money and the vet should be able to help you out if you ask for help.
