Paging Morgana at Reptayls...re lighting

Viral2 Sep 03, 2006 01:57 AM

Hi- I see you keep alot of BTSs, so I am asking for your advice. Up til now I've only kept snakes, and those that I keep need no special lights. I have not really kept up with the latest lighting issues, but I just recieved a rescue BTS and I would appreciate knowing what you recommend. Seems healthy, measures at 21 inches. Friendly boy, a New Guineau. Thanks for your help.

I'll respond for ya.

Lighting with BTS's has been hotly debated lately. For whatever reason, most thought Blueys didnt need any UVA/B-just the right temp gradient.

I would suggest doing the best for him that you can AFFORD.
Flouro UV bulbs are ok if you can get them close enough to the reptile, but then for only about 9-10 months.

I use Mercury Vapor bulbs. Great UV and Warmth all in one bulb.

And take him outside to play every so often, too!

A very good question!
Keepers and breeders will disagree over this subject - for sure. To be honest, we have seen little difference with those raised with constant UVB compared with those raised without constant UVB. After all, they brumate for months naturally, and they do that underground.

However... that does not mean we don't prefer to provide them the opportunity for some of those beneficial rays. Not all of our enclosures have UVB so we alternate cages every 2 months and the skinks get outdoor time when the weather permits.

If you only have the one - it shouldn't be too hard to get a UVB tube - 8 or 10 and a reg 60-75W lamp (for heat). If it was a rescue, chances are the extra care wouldn't hurt. When he brumates in the winter - he won't need the UVB turned on.

Be sure to provide supplements with his regular meals, and give him a snack on occasion (fruits are good for that). A good diet will help immensely.

Take care,
Morgana
