Brink of extinction???????

Mark M Sep 03, 2006 12:23 PM

I was informed by IRCF that mainland C.melanosterna that only occurs in one valley in Honduras (Rio Aguan) has been hunted to the brink of extinction. What was more shocking, was that C.palearis which happens to occur in the same vally as the Guatemalan beaded lizard has also been hunted to the brink of extiction. Apparently, some researchers that that have visited both valleys recently, could not find any iguanas. My message to any of you keeping melanosterna or palearis (which is considered a cheap pet lizard / which always bothered me)is to really take care of them, because if they do go extinct in the wild these captive animals may be the only way of preserving the species. Hopefully they will be listed as endangered, and some conservation efforts can be set forth.

Me and 2 other iguanid people are starting to work with them as a group effort. We have 2 clutches coming from 2 different breeders in Europe. They do not make for popular captives and most breeders there do not even incubate eggs because they are impossible to get rid of. They must be used for food or habitat destruction??? Sad situation indeed.
