My first ever hatchling!

sd2fast4u Sep 03, 2006 03:48 PM

I just wanted to show off Augustus, He is the first ever Eastern Box turtle I have ever had to hatch! Yeah!!! He is very active, he runs and digs. I have not seen him eat yet, but I have small insects in his tank and lots of moisture. I am so happy! I hope he lives to good old age of 100 . I am always open to advice on caring for newborns! Thanks for looking! S.D.

Too cute!! Congrats!

I think the way I fed my hatchling box turtles helped to create good eating habits later. After three months I began to give my hatchlings the same foods I fed my adults, just chopped more finely. The amount of protein was boosted to 80% instead of 50%, which is what I give my adults. At first the hatchlings didn't eat the plant matter, but at around 6-7 months they began to eat veggies and fruits. At one year olds they had a great appetite for foods that are good for box turtles
