Keeping beardie with a snake?

senior Sep 03, 2006 08:16 PM

Hi, I live in the central US and was wondering if anyone has any experience keeping a bearded and a snake in the same enclosure?

I have a 75 gal. aquarian set up so there is plenty of space.

Obviously I have concerns about them abusing one another so I came here first. I have a male adult bearded and no snake at this time.

Milksnake? Cornsnake etc?

Simply put, no, it's not a good idea to intermix different forms of life in one tank no matter how large or small it is.

Go back and read my post.

I'm guessing you work with some pretty stupid people to jump to the conclusion that I'd go ahead with this regardless of what advice I received?

Let me start by saying that I understand that you are just thinking about this. First off the snake won't appreciate company. Most snakes don't like to live with other snakes and would consider a lizard neighbor either dinner or a threat, causing the snake some stress. I had a foot and a half long corn snake accidently get loose and he went into the beardie cage. My adult female saw him and swiftly chomped him up!!!
I removed the snake from the lizards mouth (worried about too much intake) but of course the snake was dead. Had my lizard eatten such a big meal she would probable be dead too!
Moral of the story is house species seperately. Hope this answers your question.

Deffinitely not a good ideal. Many snakes will happily eat your bearded dragon, except maybe a very small species of snake. Even if the snake won't eat your bearded dragon no matter what, then there is the care requirements. Most common snakes won't do well in a arid like environment which bearded dragons require.

Though it is possible to house mixed species together in a natural vivarium, a snake and bearded dragon are not a good choice, especially snakes that can and do include lizards as part of their natural diet.

Thankyou very much.

Finding a suitable species was going to be my next question but is moot now. (Hmmm....guess I'll have to put that death adder in a separate tank...joking, joking)

Yeah, I'd noticed zoos etc. keep multiple species in vivariums which was part of the impetus for investigation.

i recently bought a corn from a guy who bred corns and beardies
if the snake wouldnt eat within 3 weeks he would feed it to his male beardie, who seemed to like the treat,
i know this was an old thread but there may be others out there reading through them for the first time too
