DEVLOPING KINKS AS YEARLINGS

ZFelicien Sep 03, 2006 09:05 PM

Ok i hate to call this guy an idiot so i won't till i get some feedback

I have an associate that just told me he's got some Honduran milks (1.2... siblings) that were 100% perfect and have just developed kinks out the blue and he's telling me it's in the genes like a cancer (his exact words)... he believes the snakes are too inbred... not saying snakes can't have problems because of inbreeding but DEVLOPING KINKS AS YEARLINGS!?

Your Thoughts... ?

Thanx

I've never heard of this, read about it, or experienced it. I believe that most breeders in this hobby would say that incubation temps are the most suspected cause of kinks. I had another experience that caused it with some black rats and only 1 clutch. I suspect that the kinks were always there and just not noticed.

Incubation temps may cause kinks, but I suspect a lot of it is the result of inbreeding.

Just like inbreeding can bring out "morphs" that are hidden, they can also bring out undesirable genetic traits that are hiding in the recessive genes, IMHO including tendency to kink.

No, this is not a professional opinion that can be backed up by research. I'm not sure the "temp" cause has research behind it either.

I saw this in a hypo corn at a petstore. As a hatchling it was ok, as a yearling it started to kink up, after a few months it was extremely kinked. Not sure what happened to cause it though.

It's pretty well known among grayband people that neonate graybands can develop kinks due to the combination of not feeding, dehydration and constant high heat. This usually happens with keepers who heat the whole room rather than using heat tape. I have been given a couple freebies that suffered from this, an '04 greeri and an '05 alterna. The greeri was horrible, could not even crawl without turning sideways. As of now the greeri is perfect, you can feel no bumps and it's a very aggressive feeder. The alterna was not as bad. It has lost most of it's kinks but they are still noticable and it is also an aggressive feeder.
