"Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin DIES!!!!!

JaredHorenstein Sep 04, 2006 12:14 AM

UNREAL is all I can say.......I am speechless.....

Reports: 'Crocodile Hunter' dead
POSTED: 1:04 a.m. EDT, September 4, 2006

SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) -- Steve Irwin, the Australian TV presenter known as the "Crocodile Hunter," has died after being stung in a marine accident off Australia's north coast.

Australian media reports say Irwin was diving in waters off Port Douglas, north of Cairns, when the incident happened on Monday morning.

Irwin was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest, according to Cairns police sources. Irwin was filming an underwater documentary at the time.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality Monday morning off Port Douglas, according to Australian media.

Irwin, 44, was director of the Australian Zoo in Queensland.

He and his American-born wife Terri Irwin became popular figures on Australian and international television through Irwin's close handling of wildlife, most notably the capture of live crocodiles.

This is a tremendous blow to the world of reptile conservation. Steve did more in his 44 years to preserve our right to keep these wonderful creatures then most will do in a life time! We all owe this man a great deal. Our prayers go out to Steve, his family and friends. We all will greatly miss the loss of this great human being.

The man has jumped on 16 foot crocodiles.
He has swam with sharks.
He has grabbed Inland Taipans by the tail...

and a frickin' STINGRAY is what kills him?

It's a sad, sad day.

Rest in Peace Steve...

I am totally stunned as well. It's very surreal - I'm sure in large part due to his larger than life personality. Huge loss. Very sad. I don't think a celebrity's death has ever affected me anywhere near the feeling I have now. Guess that characterizes me as a real herper/naturalist.

All good things to his wife and children.

Crazy!
Not something I like reading before I go to sleep.
That really sucks.
I feel bad for his wife and kid...
Is this really true?

Kingofspades Sep 04, 2006 02:54 AM

Yeah...it's all over the news. I went to check my Yahoo email and that's how I found it.
It's on MSN homepage too...

I feel so sorry for his family and close friends, he was a person with the same love of what a concieved and dangerous animals that I have had since I was a kid ( and thats going back some ). I must admit to being glad that it was not a snake or croc that caused this or there would have been idiots crying out " I knew this would happen, told he was nuts to work with the nasty animals ". The guy really loved these animals and he will be missed.

DragonDavy Sep 04, 2006 06:37 AM

NOOOOOO,
We have lost a great person.
My love goes out to his family.

An unbelievable loss for all animal lovers. I had a difficult time sleeping last night, I just couldn't believe he died so young. I know that his family and fellow zoo keepers will carry on with his conservation and environmental endeavors. We are all fortunate that he was so passionate and some times crazy about educating and showing the world that ALL animals are beautiful and worthy of caring for. The world will be a different place without him. Rest in peace, Steve!

This is a tragic day for wildlife conservation & mankind. I am in disbelief & so sad. He had so much left to do. That he was doing what he loved is my only consolation.
I started keeping snakes because he showed me what incredible creatures they are.
My heart goes out to Terri, his kids & his zoo family. He was one of a kind & i pray his work is continued.
He's with "Mary" now, his favorite croc.
